(4.22.2020) “Encompassing Red” and More by Andrew Otoba
Hi, my name is Andrew Otoba. I live in New York City and I’m 17 yrs old.
The first two photos I took on the same day using 35mm film. The old camera I used to shoot with was a Yashica Rangefinder and it had a little gap in the seal which led to the occasional light leak (the red tones on the photos). I gained inspiration to take these photos when I saw a street photographer make a whole series on blurry people walking past them. Because of this I purposely shook the camera. These both took place in central park late at night.
That last portrait was a photo taken during a studio session with a girl named Brie Batson. I set up the lighting and put a red gel over it. I asked her to slightly move her head back and forth to create the effect it did and it came out just as I envisioned. The title of this series is “Encompassing Red”.
