(4.14.2020) I Want Rice by Maya Kochan

There is a small space that is a pre-school for dozens of Eritrean and Ghanaian children whose parents immigrated to Israel. One can find this space behind an old, broken, mint green door that is placed deep in Hatikva Market behind the olive stand. There, these children start their day with breakfast and end  with dinner. They have to eat rice out of the hands of their caretakers since there is no cutlery. These children want to love. They want you to hug them and they want you to teach them the alphabet. These kids deserve a chance to sparkle and be seen as more than just illegal.
